Greyhounds Fall to No. 16 MIT in Opening Game of NCAA DIII Super Regional

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --- The Moravian University softball team fell to host No. 16 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 5-1, in the opening game of the 2023 NCAA Division III Super Regional in Cambridge, Massachusetts Friday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The Engineers scored the first run of the contest in the third inning, and MIT added a run in the fourth to move ahead 2-0
  • The Greyhounds cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder led off the frame with a single through the left side for Moravian's first hit of the day. After an out, sophomore third baseman Holly Walter connected on a double to right center that moved Forder to third. Junior left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer followed with an RBI groundout to second base to score Forder
  • The Engineers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to finish off the scoring

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian was limited to three hits in the contest with Walter going 2-for-4 with a double
  • Forder had the Hounds' only other hit, and she scored a run while Zettlemoyer contributed an RBI
  • The Blue & Grey drew five walks in the contest with junior designated player Emily Silberman getting a pair of walks
  • Freshman pitcher Sarah DeStefano dropped to 16-3 in the circle on the year, and she posted a pair of strikeouts in the game
  • For the Greyhounds, the scheduled second contest of the Super Regional on Saturday will be the squad's 46th game of the season, which will tie for the second-most games played in a season with the 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015 teams. The school record for games in a season is 49 set by the 2010 squad that reached the Division III Championship Series
