8 Softball Players Named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes

BETHLEHEM, PA – The Moravian College softball team had eight players named to the 2012 National Fastball Coaches Association Division III All-America Scholar-Athlete. The award is given to any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2011-12 academic year.

The eight players honored included then juniors pitcher Alyssa Fegely (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights HS), shortstop Brook Kowal (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis HS) and third baseman Shannen Mohr (Slatington, Pa./Parkland HS), sophomores catcher Cassie Ernst (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona HS), second baseman Eavan Matz (Port Jervis, N.Y./Delaware Valley HS), outfielder Taylor Mihalik (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS), and outfielder Alycia Sabol (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS), and freshman infielder/pitcher Lizzie Mack (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford HS).

Last year, the Greyhounds finished the season with a 35-11 record, falling just short in the College World Series with a third place finish at the NCAA Division III Union, N.J. Regional after winning their 13th straight conference title and fifth consecutive Landmark Conference Championship.

Fegely had a 5-1 record in the circle in 14 appearances, and she added two shutouts, 22 walks, 44 strikeouts and a 2.32 ERA in 57.1 innings of action.  At the plate as a designated player, Fegely hit .375 with 18 hits, 11 runs scored, four doubles, two home runs and ten RBIs, and she earned a spot on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team.

Kowal became the Greyhounds starting shortstop midway into the season last year and finished with 16 hits, eight runs scored, seven doubles and nine RBIs while contributing seven of Moravian's 72 sacrifice hits a year ago.

Mohr was the Greyhounds' starting third baseman for the third straight year, and she was named to the Landmark All-Conference First Team.  Mohr had a .336 batting average with 40 hits, 24 runs scored, ten doubles, a triple, two homers and 29 RBIs.

Ernst started 44 of Moravian's 46 games behind the plate and led the squad with a .421 average after collecting 51 hits, 38 runs scored, ten doubles, eight homers and 36 RBIs.  Ernst was also hit by a pitch 17 times last season and garnered ten walks for a .527 on-base percentage, and she threw out three of 11 base runners during the season.  Ernst was named to the NFCA All-East Region First Team last season, and she also on the Landmark All-Conference First Team and the ECAC Division III South Second Team.

Matz started 42 games in the infield last year, mainly at second base, and produced 14 hits, 11 runs scored, a double and five RBIs while contributing a team high 73 assists in the field.

Mihalik started 41 games and had a .309 average to go with 34 hits, 27 runs scored, five doubles, a team high three triples, six home runs and 28 RBIs.  Mihalik also earned a spot on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team.

Sabol saw action in 23 games a year ago, and she scored five runs and added an RBI.

Mack had ten appearances in the circle for the Greyhounds and posted a 4-2 record with 13 walks, 18 strikeouts, one shutout and a 2.55 ERA.  She also saw action at first base and contributed eight this, four runs scored, a triple and four RBIs in her debut season.

The Greyhounds will start their quest to the 2013 College World Series on Sunday, March 2 when they play their first of ten games in Clermont, Florida.
