Sullivan's Perfect Game Leads #20 Softball to Sweep of Staten Island

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The 20th –ranked Moravian College softball team swept it 2013 home opening non-conference doubleheader, defeating the College of Staten Island by scores of 8-0 in five innings in both games including a perfect game from freshman pitcher Lindsay Sullivan in the first contest at Blue & Grey Field Sunday.

Sullivan earned her first collegiate win in the circle by facing the minimum 15 batters in the contest and striking out two batters. The perfect game was the seventh in school history and the 32nd no-hitter in the Moravian record books.

The Greyhounds gave Sullivan all of the offense that she needed with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Dior George led off the inning with a double, and she scored on an error. Sophomore outfielder Jenn Dalickas had an RBI double, and she scored on an RBI single from Sullivan. Sophomore outfielder Taylor Mihalik and junior second baseman Eavan Matz also had RBI singles in the inning as Moravian sent ten batters to the plate.

Moravian scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 8-0 lead and the NCAA eight-run rule. George led off the inning with a double, and junior outfielder Melissa Cottone followed with a single. Junior designated player Cassie Ernst then hit a two-RBI double to become the 29th player in school history with 100 career hits.  Ernst scored the final run of the game on an RBI single by Dalickas.

The Greyhounds had 12 hits in the opening game with Dalickas, Sullivan and George each going two-for-three. Sophomore pitcher Victoria Procopio took the loss in the circle for Staten Island.

In the second game, Moravian opened up a 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Matz drove in the first run with an RBI single, scoring Sullivan, and Matz crossed the plate on an RBI single by junior third baseman Leann Ventriglia. George then hit an RBI single to score Ventriglia, and George crossed the plate with the final run of the inning on an RBI single from freshman outfielder Mary Schlosbon.

The Greyhounds added two runs to their lead in the bottom of the third inning for a 6-0 advantage. Matz had an RBI sacrifice fly to score junior shortstop Rachel DeLucia, and Ventriglia added an RBI single.

Moravian closed out the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth for the eight-run rule again, the sixth time this season that the Greyhounds have won by eight or more runs. With two outs, Schlosbon drew a walk and Ernst was hit by a pitch before sophomore designated player Lizzie Mack right a two-run double off the top of the right fielder's glove and onto the fence, scoring Schlosbon and Ernst.

The Greyhounds had a 12-3 advantage in hits in the game with Ventriglia going three-for-three. Schlosbon was two-for-two while Mack was two-for-three in the game.

Junior Elizabeth Tillou improved to 2-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out four in the shutout. Junior Stefanie Solari took the loss for the Dolphins.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 26th when the host Albright College for a non-conference doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
