Juniata Rallies Past Greyhounds at Landmark Conference Softball Tournament

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian College softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to fourth seed Juniata College in the first elimination game at the 2013 Landmark Conference Tournament being hosted by Susquehanna University Saturday.

With the loss, the second seeded Greyhounds see their 2013 season come to a close with an overall record of 30-12, the 13th straight season the program has won at least 30 games.

Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore outfielder Dior George was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Taylor Mihalik and another out, junior designated player Cassie Ernst connected on an RBI single up the middle to score George. The RBI was the 100th of Ernst's career becoming just the sixth player in school history to drive in 100 runs.

Juniata took a 4-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out, three-RBI double by sophomore outfielder Katie Schroeder and an RBI single from senior shortstop Steph Frith.

The Greyhounds scored once in the bottom of the seventh but left the tying runners on base to end the game. Senior pinch hitter Shannen Mohr reached on an error with two outs and junior third baseman Leann Ventriglia reentered the game to run. After senior shortstop Brook Kowal reached on another error, George connected on an RBI double to score Ventriglia.

Juniata had a 5-4 edge in hits while George was the only player with more than one hit as she went two-for-three for Moravian.

Senior Alyssa Fegely returned to the circle after an injury for the Greyhounds and allowed four runs on five hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts as she finished the year 11-3 in the circle.

Freshman Aly Smith earned the win for the Eagles, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out six batters.
