Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. --- The Moravian College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Ursinus College Friday, winning the opening game, 5-2, and taking the second contest, 8-0 in six innings, as the Greyhounds ran their winning streak to seven games and improved to 15-3 on the season.

In the opener, Moravian scored three times in the top of the second inning for a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore outfielder Jenn Dalickas led off with a single and scored on the Bears' second error of the inning on a sacrifice bunt by senior pitcher Alyssa Fegely. Senior first baseman Amanda Dizinno added an RBI single to score sophomore designated player Lizzie Mack while Fegely crossed the plate on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Dior George.

Ursinus would get a run back in the bottom half of the third inning, cutting the Greyhounds lead to 3-1 on an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Zoe Heinke.

The Greyhounds answered with a run in the top of the third inning. Junior catcher Cassie Ernst led off with a single and scored on an RBI double by Dalickas.

Moravian added a run in the top of the fourth for a 5-1 lead. George doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single from junior outfielder Miranda Sergas.

Ursinus finished the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when senior pitcher Kelly Schymanski tripled with two outs and scored on an RBI double by senior catcher Emelie McFarland.

The Bears had a 10-9 in hits in the game. Junior third baseman Monica Bonitatis was two-for-three while Schymanski and McFarland were both two-for-four for Ursinus. Dizinno and George were both two-for-three to lead Moravian while Sergas and Dalickas were both two-for-four.

Fegely improved to 6-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds with two runs, one earned on ten hits to go with five strikeouts. Schymanski allowed five runs, just two earned, on nine hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts.

In the second game, Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior shortstop Brook Kowal singled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Sergas.

The Greyhounds extended their lead to 2-0 in the top half of the fourth inning when Dizinno doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI double by freshman pitcher Lindsay Sullivan.

Moravian scored six times in the top of the sixth inning for the NCAA eight-run rule to end the game before the full seven innings were played. Dalickas led off the inning with a double, and freshman Mary Schlosbon pinch ran for Dalickas and scored on an RBI single by Sullivan. Mack drove in three runs with a bases loaded, three-RBI pinch hit double, and Mack crossed the plate on an RBI double by George. George scored the final run of the game on an RBI single from Schlosbon.

The Greyhounds had an 11-2 advantage in hits in the second contest with Sullivan going two-for-three and George going two-for-four.

In the circle, Sullivan improved to 2-0 for Moravian with her second straight shutout. Sullivan allowed just two hits while striking out two batters. Heinke took the loss for Ursinus, giving up eight runs, six earned, on ten hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 2nd in a non-conference doubleheader with Centenary (N.J.) College beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Blue & Grey Field.
